Engineering Manager, Federal & Regulated Infrastructure

Snorkel AI•San Francisco, CA
•$210,000 - $315,000

About The Position

Snorkel AI is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team building the infrastructure and deployment foundation for its Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) platform in government and regulated enterprise environments. The goal is to make the platform’s existing data, evaluation, and benchmarking capabilities available in high-assurance environments while meeting requirements for security, auditability, and compliance, without forking the product. This is a zero-to-one role. The manager will determine regulated-customer technical requirements, work with the team and platform group on architectural changes, and lead end-to-end service migration, deployment, and operations in regulated environments. The team will build infrastructure and deployment capabilities rather than produce data, partnering closely with Applied AI colleagues who work with customers to develop and deliver data and evaluations. The role involves autonomous technical, execution, and people decisions, along with meaningful participation in architecture and design discussions. The position is available in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, or remotely within the United States. The listed salary range is $210,000–$315,000 USD; compensation depends on location and other factors, and offers include employee stock options.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of software engineering experience with strong hands-on technical depth.
  • At least 2 years in an engineering management role leading a team of engineers.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience deploying into government or other regulated cloud environments with isolated, air-gapped, or otherwise restricted networks.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating scaled production cloud systems, including infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and containerized services.
  • Technical fluency to engage deeply in architecture and design reviews and propose meaningful changes.
  • Experience with security-sensitive or regulated-environment compliance, such as FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, CMMC, SOC 2, HIPAA, or similar.
  • Experience hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers.
  • Clear communication with engineers, security and compliance partners, customers, and executives.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers through rapid growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineers through a zero-to-one build: define regulated-customer technical requirements, make necessary architecture changes, and deploy and operate services in regulated environments end to end.
  • Partner with the platform team to determine where to adapt for regulated infrastructure and where to keep the product identical to the commercial platform.
  • Build repeatable environment provisioning using infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD to promote releases into regulated environments, with security scanning and change control integrated into the workflow.
  • Work with Security, Compliance, Product, and Applied AI to translate FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, CMMC, and customer-specific requirements into engineering work, documenting design decisions for audit readiness.
  • Own operational outcomes for regulated environments, including continuous monitoring, vulnerability management, incident response, and supporting evidence.
  • Address differences between commercial and regulated infrastructure and design alternatives when services or capabilities differ.
  • Drive hiring and build a strong engineering team as the company scales.
  • Coach and develop engineers and tech leads to take ownership beyond their individual projects.
  • Set priorities, plans, and delivery commitments, and adjust them as company needs change.
  • Establish engineering standards for design reviews, testing, observability, and root cause analysis.

Benefits

  • Employee stock options.
  • Opportunities to shape priorities and strategic decisions.
  • Support for career development, learning, and building technical or leadership skills.
