About The Position

The Engineering Manager for Discovery leads the team building intuitive, reliable care discovery experiences that connect members and care teams with the information and services they need across virtual and in-person care. The team delivers search and discovery across member- and staff-facing applications, along with the shared data and search infrastructure that powers them. The role spans care search, relevance, and scheduling, helping members find appropriate care and care teams navigate complex information efficiently. The manager partners with Product, Design, Data Science, and other engineering teams to improve discovery success, reduce friction from intent to action, and build scalable capabilities for multiple applications. This is a hands-on leadership role, with approximately 15% of time spent close to the technology through architecture discussions, code reviews, and implementation when appropriate, while developing a high-performing team. During the first six months, the manager will build relationships with the engineering team and cross-functional partners; learn the existing discovery experiences, shared search infrastructure, data foundations, and scheduling workflows; define and execute a technical roadmap; deliver improvements to care discovery and search; strengthen shared search and data capabilities; establish data-driven experimentation and engineering practices; and champion AI-native development while mentoring the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience managing a team of approximately 5 or more engineers in a product or platform engineering environment.
  • Strong software engineering background, including experience designing and operating backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems.
  • Experience owning and evolving production systems end-to-end, including architecture, delivery, performance, and operational reliability.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with Product and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver measurable product or business outcomes.
  • Track record of building, mentoring, and developing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Ability to reason about backend services, data models, APIs, and application architecture.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to navigate ambiguity, coach engineers, and create an environment where people can do their best work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with search infrastructure, information retrieval, ranking, relevance optimization, or knowledge graphs.
  • Experience building shared services and data platforms used by multiple applications or engineering teams.
  • Experience building member-facing or internal operational workflows, with an understanding of usability and performance.
  • Familiarity with healthcare navigation, provider and coverage data, scheduling systems, EMR integrations, or regulated health data.
  • Experience using AI-native development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or agent-based workflows to improve engineering productivity and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Build strong relationships with the engineering team and cross-functional partners, establishing clear goals, ownership, and execution expectations.
  • Develop a deep understanding of existing discovery experiences, shared search infrastructure, data foundations, and scheduling workflows.
  • Define and execute a technical roadmap balancing user-facing improvements, shared platform capabilities, and operational reliability.
  • Lead delivery of improvements to care discovery and search, improving relevance, usability, and conversion from discovery to next action.
  • Strengthen shared search and data capabilities to improve accuracy, reliability, and reuse across member- and staff-facing applications.
  • Establish data-driven experimentation and engineering practices for measurement, automated testing, observability, and performance.
  • Champion AI-native development practices and grow and mentor a high-performing engineering team.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and other engineering teams to improve discovery success and build scalable capabilities.
  • Contribute to architecture discussions, code reviews, and implementation when appropriate.
  • Own and evolve production systems end-to-end, including architecture, delivery, performance, and operational reliability.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Additional support for gender-affirming care, family and fertility planning, and travel reimbursements where care isn't locally accessible.
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) options with a 2% company match.
  • Flexible stipends to support learning and development.
  • Dog-friendly workplace program at the San Francisco office.
