About The Position

The Engineering Manager for Discovery leads the team building intuitive, reliable care discovery experiences that connect members and care teams with information and services for virtual and in-person care. The team delivers search and discovery across member- and staff-facing applications, along with shared data and search infrastructure. The role spans care search, relevance, and scheduling, with the goal of helping members find appropriate care and care teams navigate complex information efficiently. The manager partners with Product, Design, Data Science, and other engineering teams to improve discovery success, reduce friction from intent to action, and develop scalable capabilities used across applications. This is a hands-on leadership role: the manager stays close to the technology through architecture discussions, code reviews, and implementation when appropriate, estimated at about 15% of their time, while developing a high-performing engineering team. In the first six months, the manager is expected to build strong team and partner relationships; establish goals, ownership, and execution expectations; understand existing discovery experiences, search infrastructure, data foundations, and scheduling workflows; and define and execute a technical roadmap. The role leads improvements to care discovery and search, strengthens shared search and data capabilities, establishes data-driven experimentation and engineering practices, and champions AI-native development while mentoring the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing a team of approximately 5 or more engineers in a product or platform engineering environment.
  • Strong software engineering background, including experience designing and operating backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems.
  • Experience owning and evolving production systems end-to-end, including architecture, delivery, performance, and operational reliability.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with Product and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver measurable product or business outcomes.
  • Track record of building, mentoring, and developing high-performing engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with search infrastructure, information retrieval, ranking, relevance optimization, or knowledge graphs.
  • Experience building shared services and data platforms used by multiple applications or engineering teams.
  • Experience building member-facing or internal operational workflows, with a strong understanding of usability and performance.
  • Familiarity with healthcare navigation, provider and coverage data, scheduling systems, EMR integrations, or regulated health data.
  • Experience using AI-native development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or agent-based workflows to improve engineering productivity and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering team responsible for care discovery, search, relevance, scheduling, and shared search and data infrastructure.
  • Build relationships with the engineering team and cross-functional partners, establishing clear goals, ownership, and execution expectations.
  • Develop a deep understanding of discovery experiences, shared search infrastructure, data foundations, and scheduling workflows.
  • Define and execute a technical roadmap balancing user-facing improvements, shared platform capabilities, and operational reliability.
  • Lead improvements to care discovery and search that enhance relevance, usability, and conversion from discovery to next action.
  • Strengthen shared search and data capabilities to improve accuracy, reliability, and reuse across member- and staff-facing applications.
  • Establish data-driven experimentation and engineering best practices for measurement, automated testing, observability, and performance.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and engineering teams to improve discovery success, reduce friction, and build scalable capabilities.
  • Contribute to architecture discussions, code reviews, and implementation when appropriate, approximately 15% of the time.
  • Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team, championing AI-native development and technical excellence.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Additional support for gender-affirming care, family and fertility planning, and travel reimbursements where care is not locally accessible.
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) options with a 2% company match.
  • Flexible stipends to support learning and development.
