About The Position

Brex is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Bill Pay team. This is a product-led team focused on building the next generation of Accounts Payable (AP) software. The ideal candidate will have strong opinions on technical design and a willingness to engage with customers. This role is crucial as it bridges Brex's Expense Management and Banking products. The domain is established, but the roadmap is open, offering a founder-shaped opportunity for innovation.

Requirements

  • Track record of engineering leadership in building and scaling customer-facing products.
  • Experience in hiring and growing engineering teams.
  • Strong product sense, with the ability to make and defend product and UX tradeoffs.
  • Staff-engineer-level technical expertise, capable of operating at all levels and earning the respect of a strong engineering team.
  • Strong customer empathy and advocacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching and mentoring engineers across different levels.
  • Minimum of 2+ years in an engineering management role.

Nice To Haves

  • Accounts Payable / Bill Pay domain experience.
  • Experience in a Payments domain (accounting, bill pay, credit card processing, banking integrations, ERPs, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a full-stack team of 7-10 engineers focused on Brex's next-generation Accounts Payable software.
  • Grow the team through hiring and onboarding new engineers.
  • Define and refine the team's mandate within the broader Payments group, including ownership, investment areas, and customer acquisition strategies.
  • Set the team's technical and product direction, making informed tradeoffs on priorities and rationale.
  • Deliver a high-quality, reliable, and competitive Accounts Payable product, balancing feature velocity with a robust technical foundation.
  • Foster a people-centered culture based on enablement, trust, and context-sharing.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Design and Product teams to align on scope and delivery.
  • Provide strong coaching, mentorship, and career development for engineers at all levels.
  • Apply an AI-forward mindset to the team's development and operational processes, acting as a continuous bar-raiser for AI integration.
  • Translate customer feedback into engineering priorities.
  • Drive product discovery and champion the user's voice in technical tradeoff discussions to ensure the team builds the right features for the right reasons.
