About The Position

Actionstep develops SaaS legal practice management software for a global customer base of more than 30,000. The Engineering Director leads the AI Products group, which owns AI features in Actionstep products and the AI, data, and workflow capabilities that power the platform, including agents, open APIs and MCP, search, analytics, and workflow automation. The role leads several teams through their engineering managers and partners with a product lead and product managers for each area. The position is based in Denver, Colorado, in a hybrid arrangement. The director leads teams across North America and Asia-Pacific, with some early or late calls. Actionstep’s platform uses TypeScript services, React micro-frontends, a shared design system, and AWS across multiple regions. The company’s development approach uses AI throughout the lifecycle: engineers and product managers define and review work, while AI agents perform much of the building and testing. Delivery is measured for both throughput and quality. The director sets direction, standards, and priorities for multiple teams; develops the managers who run them; and works with Product to deliver production AI features with permissions, privacy, and auditability built in. The role ensures shared platform capabilities work reliably across Actionstep products, establishes evaluation, observability, and cost discipline for AI features, and brings teams onto the AI development lifecycle to improve predictable delivery. The position reports to the CTO. Other reasonable duties may be assigned as required.

Requirements

Director-level leadership experience leading multiple teams through engineering managers.
Experience shipping AI or agent features in a production SaaS product, including evaluation, permissions, observability, and cost management.
Experience moving an engineering organization to AI-driven development and demonstrating the changes with data.
Personal use of AI coding tools and experience leading a team that builds with them.
Experience building services and APIs relied on by other teams and outside developers.
Experience building software that handles confidential or regulated data.
Experience leading distributed teams across distant time zones.
Ability to lead through managers and technical leads, raise the hiring bar, make sound decisions with incomplete information, communicate complex technical trade-offs clearly, coach and grow people, build trust, and own outcomes.

Responsibilities

Set direction, standards, and priorities for a group of teams, leading through engineering managers.
Grow and coach engineering managers, engineers, and engineering teams.
Work with Product to turn the AI roadmap into production features used by firms, with permissions, privacy, and audit built in.
Ensure agents, APIs, search, data, and workflow capabilities work reliably across Actionstep products.
Build evaluation, observability, and cost discipline into the design and operation of AI features.
Bring teams in the group onto Actionstep’s AI development lifecycle and make delivery predictable.
Lead teams split between North America and Asia-Pacific, including some early or late calls.
Raise the hiring bar and uphold quality standards.
Make sound decisions with incomplete information and change course when data indicates it is needed.
Explain technical trade-offs clearly to executives and non-technical colleagues.
Build trust across teams, functions, and time zones; own outcomes, not just activity.
Undertake other reasonable duties as required.
