About The Position

Under general supervision, the Engineering Assistant 2 (EA 2) assists the Regional Quality Assurance Engineer (QAE) in providing materials engineering support for a variety of engineering projects, including roads, airports, bridges and other engineering projects. Follows standard materials engineering and accepted design practices. Assure accurate and timely operation of the Southcoast Region Materials Lab (SRML) by scheduling and assigning the work of up to three Technicians. Maintain the national accreditation for the SRML as described under AASHTO R18, including adding new tests and staying abreast of changing program requirements. Provide materials testing training and perform as the materials test reference for the Southeast Region DOT.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination. AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the composition, structures, and properties of materials, their use, behavior and performance under environmental influences, and the identification, processing, and manufacture of optimal materials for various applications.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to construct, maintain, or repair road surfaces, including sidewalks, parking lots, runways, etc.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools of quality assurance and quality control used to ensure a product fulfills functional requirements and standards.
