About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Design & Engineering Services, is looking to fill an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex position located in Juneau. This role involves performing engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects under the general direction of a registered professional engineer. Responsibilities range from entry-level design elements like storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, lighting, and traffic signals to leading the design of complex projects, including concept development, public vetting, and producing construction-ready documents. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
  • An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
  • One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere (for EA2).
  • Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere (for EA2).
  • Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level (for EA3).
  • Valid Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Perform entry/trainee-level engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects.
  • Design elements include storm drain systems, curb and gutter, sidewalks, street lighting systems, traffic signal systems, navigation aids, roadways, runways, taxiways, and aprons, signage, and guardrail.
  • Assist with the preparation of engineering studies, development of project details, and contract documents (calculations, plans, specifications, and estimates).
  • Perform mid-level engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects.
  • Assist in the research, development, and final production of project plans, specifications, estimates, and other engineering documents.
  • Lead the engineering design of highways and airports on federally funded projects.
  • Develop initial concept-level designs.
  • Vet concept designs with the public and resource agencies for input.
  • Produce construction-ready project plans, specifications, quantities, estimates, and engineering documents.
  • Typically lead designer on projects with low to mid-level complexity and assist as a specialist on complex projects.
