About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Highways and Aviation/M&O, is seeking an Equipment Operator, Journey 1/2/3 Lead (flex position) in King Salmon to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This position performs airport and highway maintenance at a State maintenance station that includes a rural Part 139 certificated airport. The role is responsible for maintaining State highways, airports, seaplane floats, bridges, and docks in a safe and fully operable condition for use by the traveling public. The position complies with all applicable Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and State of Alaska rules and regulations concerning maintenance and operation of highways and airports. The Equipment Operator Journey 1 level will utilize various types of light duty equipment for maintenance activities, with heavy equipment use in a training capacity. The position follows a two-weeks-on / two-weeks-off (2/2) rotational schedule to support continuous operations at the airport. While the Foreman is on their two weeks off, a designated Equipment Operator will serve as the Lead to maintain oversight of daily activities, ensure operational continuity, and provide on-site leadership. This position is located in King Salmon, Alaska, and the crew operates and maintains our airport and highways in all conditions, year around, including plowing snow, repairing asphalt, maintaining airfield lighting and signs, and training for emergencies. Opportunity exists to travel to other stations, possibly for extended periods, during the summer months to complete projects.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road including cost and limits.
  • Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, or watercraft.
  • Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
  • Accurately coordinate one's eyes with one's fingers, wrists, or arms to perform job-related tasks (for example, to move, carry, or manipulate objects).
  • Must submit a current copy of your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements (if applicable; CDL is required for Equipment Operator Journey 2 Level or higher).
  • Must submit three (3) professional references, including name, job title, and current phone numbers.
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383).
  • Must register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties.
  • Must provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
  • For Equipment Operator Journey 1: Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • For Equipment Operator Journey 2: A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. The proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • For Equipment Operator Journey 3: A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. The proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
  • Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test.
  • Must fill in the Education section of the application to verify education is being used to meet and/or support the required minimum qualifications/competencies.
  • If utilizing foreign education, must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university.
