Engineer II - Forward Deployed Engineer

GSK•Cambridge, MA
•$131,175 - $218,625

About The Position

GSK’s Enterprise AI team builds AI solutions that demonstrate value quickly and scale to production. The Engineer II is a senior individual contributor who owns Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) engagements from problem framing through working prototype, embeds with business unit teams, and may lead small multi-engineer engagements while mentoring G8 FDEs. The role helps qualify incoming business problems, shape engagement standards, and ensure reusable patterns are adopted. AI-augmented development is the primary mode of work, using coding assistants and multi-agent workflows to accelerate delivery. The role may ship an initial production version when the path is clear and complexity is bounded, then hands the use case to a Solutions Engineer rather than owning long-term operations. The Engineer II works with scientific, clinical, and business teams to build AI products that are used in practice. Responsibilities span technical delivery, stakeholder engagement, engineering quality, governance, coaching, and clean handoff. The role initiates governance discussions early and contributes reusable agents, prompt templates, and reference architectures to the FDE pattern library. GSK is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on vaccines and medicines, with a stated purpose of uniting science, technology, and talent to get ahead of disease. GSK describes its culture as ambitious for patients, accountable for impact, and committed to doing the right thing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in full-stack software engineering, AI engineering, machine-learning engineering, or a related field, including deploying software or AI/ML solutions to production.
  • Programming experience in Python and at least one additional language, such as TypeScript, JavaScript, or Go.
  • Experience developing generative AI solutions using one or more of agents, multi-agent orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt engineering, or evaluation.
  • Experience designing, training, evaluating, or tuning machine-learning or deep-learning models using frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, experimental design, or data-pipeline development using platforms such as Databricks or Apache Spark.
  • Experience using AI-assisted software-development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Databricks AI Assistant, or comparable tools.
  • Experience building agentic workflows, multi-agent systems, or software-delivery automation workflows.
  • Experience guiding or mentoring engineers through formal leadership, technical mentorship, or leading delivery work.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Prior experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Customer Engineer, or Solutions Architect, ideally at an AI-native company or hyperscaler.
  • Experience in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, or financial services, with familiarity with GxP, GDPR, and SOX.
  • Working knowledge of fine-tuning fundamentals and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations.
  • A track record of contributing reusable engineering patterns adopted by others.

Responsibilities

  • Own business-unit use cases from problem framing through working prototype, delivering at a days-to-weeks cadence with minimal supervision.
  • Qualify incoming business-unit requests by challenging underspecified problems, assessing feasibility, and defining scope.
  • Embed with business-unit teams, including product owners and engineering leads, to build trusted relationships and domain understanding.
  • Form evidence-based kill-or-continue recommendations at the end of engagements and present them to business-unit and Enterprise AI leadership.
  • Ship initial production versions when the delivery path is clear and complexity is bounded, then hand the work to a Solutions Engineer.
  • Lead small multi-FDE engagements, direct G8 FDEs’ work, review output, and maintain delivery quality.
  • Mentor G8 FDEs by providing technical guidance, sharing engagement judgment, and giving structured feedback.
  • Contribute to FDE interviewing and onboarding where relevant.
  • Orchestrate AI-agent workflows and multi-agent systems for prototype delivery, judging when agentic approaches are appropriate.
  • Use AI coding assistants as the default development mode, validating and correcting generated code and guiding G8 FDEs in similar practices.
  • Design agentic workflows and delivery automation, including delivery bot meshes, to automate engineering work end-to-end.
  • Package proven use cases for the Solutions Engineer, including working code, architecture rationale, open risks, and scaling considerations.
  • Create high-quality reusable FDE pattern-library contributions, including agents, prompt templates, and reference architectures, and ensure others can adopt them.
  • Initiate Code Orange, Responsible AI, and Accountability Report conversations during prototyping.
  • Coach embedded business-unit engineers in AI-augmented ways of working.
  • Contribute engagement patterns and lessons to FDE standards in an actionable form.
