Engineer I - Forward Deployed Engineer

GSK•Cambridge, MA
•$95,700 - $159,500

About The Position

GSK’s Enterprise AI team builds AI solutions that demonstrate value quickly and scale to production. Forward Deployed Engineers work with business unit (BU) teams to prototype AI ideas over days or weeks and hand proven solutions off for scale-up. The Engineer I is an individual contributor who supports engagements under the direction of Lead and Senior FDEs, learning the practice through hands-on work and mentorship. The role uses AI coding assistants and multi-agent workflows as a core part of engineering work and contributes to clean handoffs rather than carrying use cases into long-term operations. The Engineer I contributes to BU use case engagements by prototyping, demonstrating, and refining solutions; works alongside senior FDEs and BU engineers and product owners; and helps prepare software, documentation, and runbooks for handoff to a Solutions Engineer. The role applies and incrementally improves established FDE patterns and supports governance discussions, including Code Orange, Responsible AI, and Accountability Reports. Success in the first 12 months includes meaningful contributions to at least two engagements, delivery of working AI prototypes that are handed off cleanly for productionisation, demonstrated fluency with AI coding assistants, and positive working relationships with at least one BU team. For candidates based in Cambridge, MA; Waltham, MA; Rockville, MD; or San Francisco, CA, the stated annual base salary range is $95,700–$159,500. The position also offers an annual bonus and eligibility for a share-based long-term incentive program, dependent on role level. Benefits include health care and other insurance benefits for employees and families, retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.

  • Programming experience in Python and at least one additional language, such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Go, or a similar language.
  • Experience developing generative AI solutions using one or more of large language models, agents, multi-agent orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or prompt engineering.
  • Experience applying AI, machine learning, or data science methods, such as supervised or unsupervised learning, model training, model evaluation, feature engineering, or data analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a customer-facing, embedded engineering, startup, laboratory, consulting, or innovation-team environment.
  • Experience building agentic workflows, developer automation, or multi-agent delivery systems.
  • Experience in a regulated industry, such as biopharma, healthcare, or financial services, or another environment with formal governance requirements.
  • Experience contributing to reusable engineering patterns, shared libraries, templates, or an internal developer platform.

  • Work alongside a Lead or Senior FDE and build working relationships with BU engineers and product owners.
  • Operate AI-agent workflows under guidance and contribute to multi-agent prototype delivery.
  • Use AI coding assistants as a primary way of building, developing fluency with Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and Databricks AI Assistant.
  • Contribute to agentic workflows that automate delivery and work with delivery bot meshes as part of day-to-day engineering.
  • Prepare clean handoff packages for the Solutions Engineer, including documentation, runbooks, and working software.
  • Apply existing patterns from the FDE pattern library and contribute small refinements as experience develops.
  • Support Code Orange, Responsible AI, and Accountability Report conversations during prototyping alongside senior FDEs.
