About The Position

Atelier Ten is seeking a full-time Environmental Designer specializing in Energy Analysis for its New York City office. The role collaborates on projects to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, producing technical deliverables, performing whole-building energy modeling, developing HVAC engineering strategies, and consulting with project teams. The position is part of an interdisciplinary environmental design consulting group and Atelier Ten’s Energy Analysis practice. It is not remote. The work spans projects such as offices, higher education buildings, laboratories, and large masterplans. The role uses energy analysis protocols including ASHRAE 90.1, develops shoe-box and whole-building energy models, evaluates building envelope and mechanical-system options, and analyzes net-zero energy and carbon strategies. It also includes preparing technical reports, supporting sustainability assessments and life-cycle cost analyses, reviewing design documentation, collaborating with architects and stakeholders, developing internal tools and methods, and presenting analyses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in a field related to Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or Sustainable Building Design.
  • 2–5 years of professional experience in building energy analysis or high-performance HVAC design at commercial-building scale.
  • Experience with specialized building energy simulation software; IES-VE and/or eQuest are preferred.
  • Ability to develop and articulate engineering problems related to HVAC system design, building-envelope performance, passive conditioning strategies, building energy use, and carbon emissions.
  • Experience with or understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems design for commercial buildings.
  • Experience applying ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189 to new and/or existing building projects.
  • Experience with green building rating systems such as LEED, WELL, or Living Building Challenge, and energy-code compliance such as IECC or 90.1 at various design stages.
  • Experience gathering and documenting energy-model inputs and outputs, interpreting results, and documenting analyses in written and graphical formats.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Curiosity, proactivity, self-motivation, attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and willingness to learn across multiple projects.
  • Interest in improving processes and building tools, and ability to communicate ideas and complex technical concepts to varied audiences.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment, contribute to integrative design, work iteratively, and communicate effectively with colleagues.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) credential in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering.
  • Training in statistics, data analytics, advanced algorithms, or coding.
  • BEMP, LEED AP+ specialty, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, or similar credential.
  • Experience with EnergyPlus and/or Grasshopper.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply internal methodologies based on ASHRAE 90.1 and other industry standards for new and existing building projects.
  • Participate in the customized training program and develop analyses for projects and clients.
  • Develop shoe-box and whole-building energy models using IES-VE and/or eQuest to support energy analyses and design optioneering.
  • Evaluate envelope performance, building massing, and mechanical-system options across climate zones and standards.
  • Identify and analyze net-zero energy and carbon strategies using metrics such as carbon emissions, time-of-use rates, and source/site energy.
  • Prepare written summaries and technical reports for clients and other stakeholders.
  • Support senior staff with sustainability assessments, energy and thermal-comfort analysis, energy benchmarking, climate-impact mitigation strategies, and life-cycle cost analysis.
  • Use analytical and computational methods to evaluate complex building physics and building systems.
  • Review and interpret architectural and mechanical design documentation for whole-building energy-model simulations.
  • Collaborate with architects and design team members to recommend improvements to energy performance and carbon emissions.
  • Assist colleagues with building simulations, carbon-emissions calculations, annual energy-cost analysis, and life-cycle cost analysis.
  • Develop new approaches and tools with the Energy Analysis practice to improve team efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain internal databases, spreadsheet tools, methods, and standards.
  • Attend site visits and project meetings, and present analyses to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with integrated design groups across environmental design consulting, daylight and façade analysis, lighting design, and benchmarking.
