Energy Analyst/Environmental Designer

Atelier Ten•New York City, NY

About The Position

Atelier Ten is seeking a full-time Environmental Designer specializing in Energy Analysis for its New York City office. The role contributes to energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction goals by producing technical deliverables, performing whole-building energy modeling, developing HVAC engineering strategies, and consulting on projects. The position is part of an interdisciplinary environmental design consulting group and Atelier Ten’s Energy Analysis practice. It is not a remote position. The work includes energy analysis for projects such as offices, higher education buildings, laboratories, and large masterplans. The successful candidate will learn Atelier Ten’s internal methodologies, which follow ASHRAE 90.1 and other industry standards, and participate in a customized training program. They will develop building energy models, evaluate building envelope and mechanical system options, assess net-zero energy and carbon strategies, and prepare technical reports and client-facing summaries. The role also supports sustainability assessments, energy and thermal comfort analysis, benchmarking, climate impact mitigation, and life-cycle cost analysis. The Energy Analyst collaborates with architects, engineers, clients, and other stakeholders as part of an iterative, integrated design process. The role also contributes to improving team methods and tools, maintaining internal databases and spreadsheets, attending site visits and project meetings, and presenting analysis results. The position is based in Atelier Ten’s New York City office and offers a flexible/hybrid work schedule, though it is explicitly not remote.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field related to Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or Sustainable Building Design.
  • 2–5 years of professional experience in building energy analysis or high-performance HVAC design at the commercial-building scale.
  • Experience with specialized building energy simulation software; IES-VE and/or eQuest preferred.
  • Ability to develop and explain engineering problems related to HVAC system design, building envelope performance, passive conditioning strategies, building energy use, and carbon emissions.
  • Experience or understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems design for commercial buildings.
  • Experience applying ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1, 90.1, and 189 to new and/or existing building projects.
  • Experience with green building rating systems such as LEED, WELL, or Living Building Challenge, and energy code compliance such as IECC or ASHRAE 90.1 at various design stages.
  • Experience gathering and documenting energy model inputs and outputs, interpreting results, and documenting analyses in written and graphical formats.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Curiosity, initiative, self-motivation, attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and willingness to learn across multiple projects.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to different audiences and work collaboratively in an iterative, integrated design environment.

Nice To Haves

  • PE or EIT credential in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering.
  • Training in statistics, data analytics, advanced algorithms, or coding.
  • BEMP, LEED AP+ specialty, WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, or a similar credential.
  • Experience with EnergyPlus and/or Grasshopper.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply internal energy analysis methodologies based on ASHRAE 90.1 and other industry standards.
  • Develop shoebox and whole-building energy models using IES-VE and/or eQuest to support building design and optioneering.
  • Evaluate building envelope performance, massing, and mechanical-system options across climate zones and standards.
  • Identify and analyze net-zero energy and carbon strategies using metrics such as emissions, time-of-use rates, and source/site energy.
  • Prepare written summaries and technical reports for clients and stakeholders.
  • Support sustainability assessments, energy and thermal comfort analysis, energy benchmarking, climate impact mitigation strategies, and life-cycle cost analysis.
  • Use analytical and computational methods to assess building physics and building systems.
  • Review and interpret architectural and mechanical design documentation for whole-building energy simulations.
  • Collaborate with architects and design teams to recommend improvements to energy performance and carbon emissions.
  • Simulate buildings and support calculations of carbon emissions, annual energy costs, and life-cycle costs.
  • Help develop approaches and tools to improve the efficiency of Atelier Ten’s Energy Analysis practice.
  • Develop and maintain internal databases, spreadsheet tools, methods, and standards.
  • Attend site visits and project meetings, and present analyses to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with integrated design groups across environmental design consulting, daylight and façade analysis, lighting design, and benchmarking.
