The Donor Care Specialist performs donor screening and whole blood collection, including collections at offsite blood drives and in the donor center, as well as therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. The role prepares and labels blood components and samples, documents donor records and deferrals, enters data, and helps ensure quality control standards are met. The specialist obtains blood specimens from donors and patients, supports donor recruitment, replenishes supplies, and maintains clean and sanitary work areas. The position also requires providing service excellence to patients, families, visitors, volunteers, coworkers, and other users of departmental services while following applicable hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The posting describes two levels. Donor Care Specialist I requires prior phlebotomy experience; national certification or completion of an accredited phlebotomy program is preferred, and BLS certification is required within 90 days of hire. Donor Care Specialist II requires current DPT (ASCP) certification or QDP (ASCP) qualification, both of which must be maintained, and current BLS certification. The second level also includes training, orienting, and mentoring new hires and students.
