About The Position

The Dockworker sorts and handles freight moving in and out of over-the-road equipment, containers, city trailers, and straight trucks. The role operates forklifts and pallet jacks to load and unload freight and uses dock tools to secure shipments. Dockworkers follow applicable regulations and established billing and quality-control procedures, report freight shortages and damages, and help maintain a safe and clean work environment.

This position is available full time or part time in Norfolk, Virginia. Pay is $26.55–$30.30 per hour, based on experience. The work involves physical activity throughout the shift, frequent handling of freight, exposure to changing temperatures and weather, and schedules that may include nights, weekends, and holidays depending on operational demands.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Authorized to work in the United States.
• Ability to read, write, communicate, and comprehend English to perform job tasks, understand instructions and regulations, communicate with coworkers and the public, respond to inquiries, and complete required shipping documents, reports, and records.

Nice To Haves

• Warehouse, freight, dock, forklift, or pallet jack experience.
• Forklift certification or hazmat training.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in verifying shipments.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload trailers using forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment in compliance with state, federal, and Department of Transportation regulations.
• Use dock tools to ensure freight is loaded securely and properly, including maintaining straps, bars, air bags, cardboard, and dunnage.
• Load, recoup, rewrap, and stack freight as needed.
• Verify shipments by reading labels and correctly securing freight for loading and unloading trailers.
• Follow established bill and quality-control procedures to support timely, claims-free, and cost-efficient shipments.
• Log, report, and process freight shortages and damages.
• Promote and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
