About The Position

Docker is seeking a Director of Product Design to lead the team responsible for existing and new products across its portfolio, including graphical interfaces and the command-line interface. The role manages and develops product designers, raises the quality of shipped work, and remains hands-on through prototyping, critique, and detailed design execution. The director works closely with principal designers, the Director of UX Research, design engineers, engineering leaders, and product leaders to make technically complex systems clear and usable. The position reports to the SVP of Design and is remote, with working hours overlapping US and Europe time zones.

Requirements

  • Experience leading a product design team of comparable size through change.
  • Experience developing designers from mid-level through senior and staff levels.
  • Close partnership experience with design engineers and engineering leaders, and ability to engage with technical decisions that shape the user experience.
  • Ability to communicate a clear point of view to engineering and product leaders while remaining open to challenge and better ideas.
  • Continues to make and prototype design work, critique flows at the level of spacing, states, motion, and copy, and present work from the last year.
  • Uses AI tools in daily work and can demonstrate how they are used, including when human intervention is needed because output is insufficient.
  • Experience designing technically complex products and making underlying systems clear and intuitive.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading design for AI-powered or agent products, including experiences beyond a graphical interface.
  • Experience designing for both developer-led adoption and complex enterprise customers.
  • Ability to prototype in front-end code such as React or TypeScript.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the product design team.
  • Set craft expectations for each level and uphold them through critique and hands-on design work.
  • Partner with engineering and product from project inception so design and engineering ship together.
  • Give designers ownership of important problems, providing the context and trust to make sound decisions.
  • Shape the team's use of AI tools, ensuring human judgment leads while tools accelerate work.
  • Collaborate with design engineering and the design system team so shared systems help teams move faster without constraining new ideas.

Benefits

  • Remote-first work arrangement, with offices in Seattle and Paris for connection and collaboration.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Generous paid time off, designated quarterly Whaleness Days, and a designated end-of-year Whaleness break.
  • Home office support.
  • Technology stipend equivalent to US$100 net per month.
  • Annual learning and development stipend for conferences, courses, certifications, and continued learning.
  • Sixteen weeks of paid parental leave after six months of employment.
  • Equity for all full-time employees.
