About The Position

The Director of Wellness reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of health and wellness services within the retirement home. This role ensures residents receive high-quality, person-centered care that promotes independence, dignity, and overall well-being. The Director leads the wellness team, supports residents’ physical and mental health, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a senior living, long-term care, or healthcare setting, with leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of senior care best practices, health promotion, and chronic disease management.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (required).
  • Knowledge of applicable healthcare regulations and standards (e.g., RHRA, LTC regulations, HIPAA).
  • Leadership and team-building skills

  • Empathy and commitment to resident-centered care
  • Proficiency in healthcare software and electronic health records (EHR)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee individualized wellness plans for residents based on health assessments and personal preferences.
  • Monitor residents’ health and coordinate care services, including medication management and wellness checks.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate wellness programs (e.g., fitness, nutrition, chronic disease management, mental health support).
  • Act as a liaison between residents, families, healthcare providers, and staff to ensure optimal care.
  • Assists the team in the implementation and evaluation of the quality improvement initiatives, risk management systems, data collection and analysis, report writing, procedural updates
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of best practice and risk management initiatives related to resident services (i.e. falls, restraint use, wound management, Infection Control)
  • Maintains an active presence in the Resident Home Areas mentoring staff while overseeing the provision of quality resident care
  • Facilitate Occupational Therapy and Wheelchair Representatives with concerns regarding resident mobility and addressing issues on a weekly basis.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise wellness staff, including nurses, personal support workers (PSWs), caregivers, and unregulated care providers.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and ensure ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure proper staff coverage to meet care requirements and maintain regulatory standards.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records, care plans, and incident reports.
  • Ensure compliance with local and RHRA regulations and ORCA standards.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and licensing reviews as required.
  • Participation in Occupational Health and Safety practices, principles, legislation & committee
  • Educate residents and staff on wellness topics including preventive health, fall prevention, nutrition, and mental well-being.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle practices within the retirement community.
  • Advocate for residents’ needs, ensuring their voices are heard in care planning and decision-making.
  • Ensure all staff are trained on hire and annually thereafter on all mandatory training requirements.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, nursing team, and other departments to ensure a cohesive care approach.
  • Communicate regularly with families about residents’ health status and wellness opportunities.
  • Coordinate with external medical professionals, therapists, and community health services.
