About The Position

CoinLedger’s Done For You team handles complex crypto tax reconciliations for clients with scattered exchange, wallet, blockchain, and DeFi activity. The Crypto Reconciliation Specialist owns individual client cases from kickoff through delivery of the final tax report, using evidence and internal tools to locate missing data, classify transactions, resolve cost-basis and pricing issues, and produce accurate, defensible tax figures. The role also involves explaining the process and results to clients, using AI tools for analytical work while verifying their output, and reporting product bugs and workflow issues to engineering. This is an independent contractor role. The posting says CoinLedger is not actively hiring for this role but welcomes applications for future openings.

Requirements

  • 1–3+ years of hands-on crypto reconciliation or crypto tax work for individual clients; work solely on one’s own portfolio does not qualify.
  • Fluency with blockchain explorers, including Etherscan and related explorers, Solscan, and Bitcoin explorers.
  • Understanding of DeFi lending, liquidity pools, and staking.
  • Solid US crypto tax fundamentals, including disposals versus transfers, income at fair market value, holding periods, cost-basis methods, Form 8949, Schedule D, Form 1099-DA, and 2025 per-wallet basis tracking.
  • Experience with crypto tax tools such as CoinLedger, Koinly, CoinTracker, TaxBit, ZenLedger, or TokenTax.
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills, including reshaping raw exchange exports.
  • Daily use of AI tools for analytical work and judgment to identify when AI output is wrong.
  • Ability to work independently, manage one’s own schedule, and meet deadlines.
  • Fluent professional English and comfort on client video calls.
  • Must be based in the US and authorized to work in the US.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or EA credential.
  • SQL, JSON-RPC, or scripting experience.
  • Experience with defunct-exchange recoveries, including Celsius, FTX, BlockFi, or Voyager.

Responsibilities

  • Own client cases from kickoff call through final tax report, managing multiple cases and meeting deadlines.
  • Conduct onboarding calls to understand each client’s history, goals, and concerns.
  • Document judgment calls and client decisions so reconciliations are defensible.
  • Find missing data sources by tracing deposits and withdrawals, reviewing imports, and using counterparty addresses, blockchain explorers, client histories, and internal CLI tools.
  • Identify incomplete imports and request the specific exports, API keys, or wallet confirmations needed from clients, with clear instructions.
  • Find and merge unmatched transfers, bridges, and trades.
  • Classify uncategorized or misclassified transactions, including swaps, liquidity activity, staking, DeFi loans, airdrops, and spam tokens, using transaction evidence and client information.
  • Price obscure tokens and NFTs, determine a defensible approach when credible prices are unavailable, and resolve missing cost basis and inflated gains at their root cause.
  • Review the 2025 move from universal to per-wallet cost-basis tracking under the Rev. Proc. 2024-28 safe-harbor allocation.
  • Reconcile reported proceeds against exchange Forms 1099-DA and prepare Form 8949 and Schedule D figures.
  • Map unsupported-exchange data into CoinLedger’s import template.
  • Complete reconciliations to CoinLedger’s quality standard, resolving cost-basis, missing-data, classification, pricing, and proceeds mismatches and reviewing ignored transactions.
  • Meet with clients at the start of the reconciliation, communicate regularly, and deliver and explain final reports.
  • Use Claude Code and CoinLedger’s internal AI tooling as appropriate, verify AI output, and make final judgments and changes independently.
  • Report product bugs and workflow friction to CoinLedger engineers.
  • Work independently, manage a personal schedule, meet deadlines, attend required meetings, and remain responsive on Slack.
