About The Position

The Department of Linguistics at McGill University is seeking Course Lecturers for the Fall 2026 term to teach various undergraduate courses. These courses cover a range of linguistic topics including Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Speech Science, Meaning in Language, Languages of the World, Phonetics, and Computational Linguistics. The role involves all aspects of course delivery, from preparation and teaching to student evaluation and supervision of teaching assistants. Requirements

  • Successful completion of at least PhD Evaluation 1 or equivalent experience
  • Classroom teaching experience through previous employment as Teaching Assistant or Course Lecturer for at least 120 hours, or equivalent
  • For current graduate students, CGPA of 3.7 or higher
  • Authorized to work in Canada
  • Willing to work in the province of Quebec
  • English communication both verbally and in writing

Nice To Haves

  • Documented research experience in Phonetics (for LING 210)
  • Documented research experience in dialectology or phonetics (for LING 260)
  • Research experience on typologically diverse languages (for LING 315)
  • For current graduate students, at least A- in LING 630 Phonetics 3 and LING 635 Phonetics and Phonology 4 (for LING 210)
  • For current graduate students, at least A- in LING 630 Phonetics 3 and LING 521 Dialectology or equivalent (for LING 260)
  • For current graduate students, at least A- in LING 631 Phonology 3 and LING 635 Phonetics and Phonology 4 (for LING 330)

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of the Course and Course plan
  • Delivery of the Course
  • Evaluation of students
  • Submitting to the University a report on student attendance and student grades
  • Supervision of Teaching Assistants or any other teaching support staff
  • Upon request, review of students’ grades
  • Meeting with students, being available to answer questions and give advice concerning Course content and requirements
  • Perform duties in compliance with the Pedagogical Regulation and as specified in the administrative directives of the Hiring Unit
  • Use appropriate pedagogical methods and material
