The Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture at McGill University is seeking applications for a Course Lecturer for the Fall 2026 term. The course, ARCH 405, is a project-based design theory and critique course focusing on the life cycles of existing buildings, materials, and resources from a multi-scale perspective. It emphasizes the conceptual and technical application of sustainable and circular design approaches to complex programs addressing current socio-economic challenges and crises. The course aims to reinforce critical thinking on architecture and sustainability, strengthen design skills for sustainable proposals, impart theoretical knowledge on circular economy principles, develop analytical and design tools for circular and sustainable design, and enhance communication skills for presenting complex ideas. The course structure includes modules on precedent analysis, reuse diagnoses, and comprehensive development of architectural proposals. Design theory is covered through lectures and debates, and knowledge of local projects is gained through site visits. Reviews are key learning exercises, and instructors are involved in their preparation. The teaching methodology relies on lectures, guest lectures, in-class debates, site visits, applied exercises, and structured desk-critiques. All students will be required to detail their work and develop scaled models.
