About The Position

The Department of Jewish Studies is inviting applications to teach JWST 281 – Introductory Yiddish 1 in Fall 2026. This course is an introduction to Yiddish, the millennium-old language of Ashkenazic Jews, covering basic grammar and vocabulary with practice in speaking, reading, and writing. Course materials draw on Yiddish literature, humor, songs, and films, allowing students to combine language acquisition with an exploration of Yiddish culture across different regions and time periods. The course will be taught in-person by one instructor.

Requirements

  • MA in Yiddish.
  • Extensive experience teaching Yiddish at the university level.
  • Authorized to work in Canada.
  • Willing to work in the province of Quebec.
  • Proficient in English communication, both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Teach JWST 281 – Introductory Yiddish 1 in Fall 2026.
  • Cover basic grammar and vocabulary in Yiddish.
  • Provide practice in speaking, reading, and writing Yiddish.
  • Utilize course materials drawing on Yiddish literature, humor, songs, and films.
