About The Position

The Cosmetologist 1 at the Department of Human Services’ Norristown State Hospital provides therapeutic cosmetology services to support the wellbeing, health, comfort, and confidence of patients with severe and persistent mental illness during long-term care. The role includes assessing patients’ hair, head, and scalp and reporting conditions that require medical or hygienic monitoring; providing cosmetology and beauty treatments; maintaining the Beauty Shop in accordance with state licensing, sanitation, and facility requirements; keeping service records and handling phone messages; and collaborating with nurses and other employees to support patient care. The position is full-time and onsite, with a schedule of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, including a 30-minute lunch. The schedule may change based on operational needs. Telework is not available.

Requirements

Possess a cosmetologist license issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology.
Meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement.
Be able to perform the essential job functions.
A conditional offer requires a medical examination.
A conditional offer requires submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including Pennsylvania State Police and FBI clearances.

Responsibilities

Evaluate each patient’s hair, head, and scalp, and report conditions requiring medical or hygienic monitoring.
Provide haircuts, permanent waves, relaxers, coloring, facials, manicures, and scalp, hair, and other treatments.
Ensure Beauty Shop work complies with state rules, regulations, licensing and sanitation standards, and facility policies and procedures.
Answer the phone, communicate messages, and keep daily records of services provided.
Work with nurses and other employees to support consistent patient care.
Maintain a sympathetic attitude toward all patients.
