About The Position

This is a part-time, regular appointment within the Facilities & Maintenance Department at SOWELA. The role is responsible for securing and opening facilities, enforcing parking and traffic regulations, conducting patrols, and surveilling campus sites. The position also involves providing emergency assistance, training other officers, assisting faculty and staff, working special assignments, communicating with security and facilities personnel, attending offsite activities and training, liaising with other college security units and local law enforcement, monitoring surveillance cameras, investigating campus incidents, and preparing reports. The role requires developing and applying policies and procedures, recommending process improvements, and potentially attending emergency medical training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Six months’ experience in law enforcement or security
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and render assistance as required
  • Ability to prepare reports on activities and security incidents
  • Ability to provide crowd and traffic control at special events
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Perform basic mathematical computations needed to complete assignments
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize job duties to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in the use of standard office equipment and networked personal computers
  • Proficiency in a variety of software, including but not limited to Microsoft Office
  • Ability to maintain interpersonal professional working relationships at all levels – students, peers, and Executives
  • Must be state board certified through Louisiana State Board of Private Security Examiners (LSBPSE) or able to pass state board certification

Responsibilities

  • Securing and/or opening facilities
  • Enforcing parking and traffic regulations
  • Conducting active foot and mobile patrols
  • Surveilling all site facilities by being visible to faculty and staff
  • Providing emergency assistance as needed, which may include intervening in serious complex matters
  • Training or assisting in training other officers
  • Assisting faculty and staff as needed
  • Working special assignments as directed by supervisor
  • Communicating updates with other Security and Facilities personnel by emails, verbally, or in meetings as applicable
  • Attending offsite activities as applicable, including attending offsite security training
  • Liaising with sister college police forces and/or safety and security units to ensure smooth operations
  • Fostering relationships with local law enforcement
  • Monitoring surveillance cameras
  • Investigating campus crimes and emergencies
  • Monitoring traffic
  • Maintaining security logs
  • Preparing reports to include traffic violations and campus incidents
  • Developing applications of policies and procedures using independent judgment
  • Identifying and recommending changes to processes, policies, and procedures to better expedite departmental processes
  • Attending emergency medical training
  • Other duties as assigned
