About The Position

Our Community Development (CD) team is seeking a part-time temporary Community Development Worker (16 weeks for 35 hours per week). The Community Development Worker will support social and community development, primarily with adults. The CDW will be responsible for supporting the CD team in our communications and work with community groups and residents in Toronto. Specific responsibilities include supporting task groups with their work, and developing education materials for resident capacity building. If you enjoy community work, this is the position for you! Please note that this job opening is for Canada Summer Jobs applicants only, who must meet the participant requirements under the Canada Summer Jobs Agreement with the Employment and Social Development Canada as outlined: between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and; have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

  • Ability to bring people together for a common purpose and to help facilitate challenging conversations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Organized, self-motivated and a creative problem-solver
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills (ie. Google Workspace)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Non-authoritative voice of encouragement and ability to recognize and build on community members’ existing skills and assets
  • A police check will be required
  • Demonstrated respect to YSM’s principles of faith, mission and values

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of social media platforms and social enterprise is an asset (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
  • Experience working with equity-seeking groups, familiarity and empathy for the complex challenges faced by equity-seeking groups is an asset
  • Knowledge of community initiatives, grassroots groups and events in Regent Park is an asset
  • Strong media, tech and design skills (ie. video editing) an asset
  • Interest in evaluations, developing metrics and measuring the impact of community work
  • Marketing experience is not required but an asset

Responsibilities

  • Create slide decks, one pagers and other educational materials to be used for community development capacity building for residents and other agencies
  • Support, coordinate and co-facilitate group meetings and workshops, as needed
  • Contribute to community members’ capacity building and leadership development
  • Contribute to the increased collaboration of stakeholders - residents, grassroots groups, local organizations - in diverse projects
  • Promote CD and projects via community partners, community members, social media etc. as needed
  • Support community development related research projects as needed
  • Provide administrative support to Community Development Team and community groups supported by the CD Team as required
