About The Position

This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and requires applicants to meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. The role involves accepting, sorting, and storing food donations while adhering to Safe Food Handling Guidelines and Health & Safety Protocols. Administrative tasks include answering phones, interviewing and registering clients, scheduling appointments, and maintaining databases and spreadsheets. The worker will also interact with volunteers, greet clients warmly, assist them in selecting products, and guide them on food quantities based on household size and available products. Responsibilities include setting up and tearing down the food distribution space, moving items from storage, and cleaning/disinfecting work areas. Adherence to all health and safety standards, including OH&S Act and Regulations and Salvation Army policies, is mandatory. The position requires maintaining the organization, appearance, cleanliness, and safety of the Food Bank as recommended by Public Health.

Requirements

  • Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • Persons with Social Service Worker degree prioritized.
  • Computer/Database experience including Microsoft Office Word & Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Accepting, sorting, and properly storing food donations using Safe Food Handling Guidelines and Health & Safety Protocols.
  • Performing administrative work including answering phone/returning voicemail, interviewing/registering new clients in person and over phone, creating appointments, completing Food Banks Canada (Link2Feed) database entries for clients served, creating statistical spreadsheets (excel), and creating posters/signs (word/other).
  • Working with volunteers in their support roles and lending leadership to the team when necessary.
  • Warmly greeting clients in person and helping them select products.
  • Working within fair share food guidelines to guide clients with quantities of foods based on household size and available products.
  • Setting up and tearing down the food distribution space, bringing items from fridges, freezers, and warehouse spaces.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting work areas, counters, tables etc. before and after the food bank.
  • Dealing with garbage & recycling daily.
  • Adhering to all health and safety standards.
  • Assisting with ensuring that the Food Bank is maintained in organization, appearance, maintenance, cleanliness, and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Working in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abiding by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Performing other position related duties as required.
