The Child Care worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army and/or attend programs. This position provides support to Parent-Child programs and other programs as provided by Kitchener Community Church and Family Care Centre.

Requirements

  • Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
  • Aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • A valid Social Insurance Number.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.
  • 1 – 2 years experience working with children.
  • Comfortable in speaking with parents and caregivers daily.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Participate in orientation training.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the daily operation of Parent-Child programs.
  • Support individuals/families accessing Parent-Child programs.
  • Assist with the implementation of literacy programs.
  • Plan and supervise community-based drop-in programs.
  • Plan and implement activities for the Summer Day Camps.
  • Supervise and support children.
  • Set up and cleanup program space.
  • Disinfect toys.
  • Provide input in the planning of activities.
  • Participate in staff, team and planning meetings.
  • Create and implement opportunities for intergenerational interactions and programs.
  • Survey participant families for program satisfaction and collate responses.
  • Ensure all children and adults are treated with dignity and respect, and maintain all information in confidence.
  • Know, understand and assist with other programs within the Family Care Centre including the food hamper program.
  • Provide assistance in the supervision of children up to 12 years of age.
  • Greeting families as they arrive with their children.
  • Monitor and engage with the children in connection with other childcare workers.
  • Provide support for the early education of the children.
  • Communicate with parent’s successes of the child’s day.
  • Communicate with parents any challenges that may have been experienced.
  • Supervise kids on the bus to and from Adventure Camp.
  • Create and maintain a list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
