About The Position

The Food Bank Support Worker plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of food distribution services to individuals and families in need. This position involves hands-on tasks such as collecting donations, organizing inventory, preparing food hampers, and engaging with clients in a respectful and compassionate manner. This is a Full Time Fixed Term (Contract) Canada Summer Job Position, funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Requirements

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).
  • Ability to lift and carry boxes up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Pick up food donations from local grocery stores and community partners.
  • Accurately weigh and record all incoming donations, maintaining detailed documentation.
  • Sort and shelf donated food items according to food safety guidelines.
  • Monitor inventory levels, report shortages or excesses, and ensure proper stock rotation.
  • Assemble food hampers based on dietary needs and family size.
  • Distribute hampers to clients in a welcoming and respectful manner, maintaining confidentiality and dignity.
  • Set up and organize the Food Rescue Store for client access.
  • Staff the Food Rescue Store during opening hours, assist clients, and maintain a daily log of clients served.
  • Ensure the Food Rescue Store remains clean, stocked, and organized.
  • Discharge responsibilities in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement and code of conduct.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies.
