About The Position

Northern Bank’s Community Banking business model is built on partnership, and it’s the role of the Community BDO to embody Northern’s ideal of partnership within the community. In this context, business development is not about simply selling bank products and services, but, instead, working within the business community to understand a business’ challenges and to help identify solutions. This role focuses primarily on new client acquisition within an assigned geographical footprint/market. While the role will partner with local branches, a successful BDO thrives on their own ability to identify opportunities and make the appropriate connections. This individual must be willing to invest time and talent to engage with the community and to make an impact in the small business community. The BDO must have and/or establish strong relationships with advisors, community organizations, centers of influence and other connections that can aid in the assistance needed to help small businesses thrive and prosper.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent related experience, required.
  • Strong sales skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively to find solutions to customer’s problems.
  • Basic knowledge of credit and understanding of commercial business and banking.
  • Deeply rooted, locally engaged with active ties to the community and key partners.
  • History of volunteerism
  • Centers of Influence relationships
  • Technologically proficient

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate business banking opportunities for both deposit and loan relationships within a defined geographic area.
  • Work with internal and external business partners to develop and deliver solutions to prospects
  • Identify key community partners (COIs, organizations) and actively manage these relationships to maintain visibility and drive an impact in the community
  • Serve as a partner for clients and prospects, helping to identify and understand their challenges and how resources, brank products and solutions can help them thrive
  • Conduct preliminary underwriting and structure of credit requests
  • Manage a portfolio of business clients to help minimize risk for the bank, cross sell to the book of business and create a positive customer experience
  • Maintain internal contact management system including full relationship contact history throughout the business development lifecycle.
