Coffee Shop Barista
About The Position
As a Barista at Hy-Vee, you will provide friendly customer service while preparing beverages, keeping the coffee shop stocked and clean, and helping customers find products and get answers to their questions. The role involves taking orders at the counter and by phone, preparing and replenishing products, monitoring freshness and appearance, and keeping ahead of daily production needs. You will also handle food safely, maintain the work area to department standards, receive and put away products, review invoices as needed, operate the department register and process payments where applicable, and remove trash. Baristas work with teammates to provide a positive customer experience, comply with dress code, hygiene standards, and company policies, and may assist in other store areas or special projects. Training and support are provided; prior experience is not required. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
Requirements
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Basic math skills, including simple addition, subtraction, counting, and recording.
- Ability to communicate clearly and helpfully with customers and teammates.
- Ability to stay organized and keep pace in a busy coffee shop environment.
- Less than a high school diploma or equivalent is accepted.
- Ability to frequently stand and walk throughout a shift.
- Ability to perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, point-of-sale transactions, and cleaning and sanitation duties.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen is required for employment.

- Up to six months of similar or related work experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers warmly and provide outstanding service, including learning customers’ names and going the extra mile to make visits positive.
- Take customer orders at the counter and over the phone; help customers find products and answer questions.
- Prepare and replenish coffee shop products as needed.
- Monitor product freshness and appearance and follow or develop a production list to meet daily needs.
- Handle food safely and keep the work area clean, neat, and in accordance with department standards.
- Check in products, put products away, and review invoices as needed.
- Operate the department register and process payments where applicable.
- Remove trash promptly and maintain a tidy department.
- Work with teammates to provide customers with a smooth, positive experience.
- Follow Hy-Vee dress code, hygiene standards, and company policies.
- Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed.
