Phlebotomists properly identify patients and obtain blood specimens as ordered by a licensed health care provider. In the presence of the patient, the Phlebotomist ensures specimens are properly identified with a hospital-generated label or with two patient identifiers, the date, the time, and their unique ID. The role is responsible for timely delivery of specimens to the laboratory and for communicating with nursing and laboratory staff if there is a problem obtaining a specimen. Phlebotomists also complete courier rounds, chain-of-custody drug testing, and breath alcohol testing.
