Client Deployed Engineer

Kraken•New York, NY
•$140,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Kraken is hiring a Client Deployed Engineer to help bridge client needs and engineering delivery. This is a hands-on software engineering role with responsibility for both building solutions and owning a client relationship. The engineer will work directly with clients, understand their operations, determine whether to configure existing platform capabilities or build new software, and own delivery from discovery through deployment and adoption. The role involves investigating workflows, systems, and data; turning unclear operational problems into practical solutions; and designing, implementing, testing, and releasing production software when needed. The engineer will use coding agents and AI-enabled tools as part of investigation, development, and testing, while remaining accountable for the quality and outcomes of shipped work. They will collaborate with client engineering, delivery, and product teams, and identify opportunities to make successful solutions reusable across clients. The team is being built in New York and focuses on significant operational problems where investigation and hands-on engineering can produce meaningful improvements. Priorities and workstreams may evolve, and the role requires comfort making progress amid ambiguity and pace. The position does not offer visa sponsorship; applicants must already have the right to work in the country where they apply.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering experience, including independently delivering and maintaining production software.
  • Ability to navigate unfamiliar codebases, review changes, and make sound technical decisions.
  • Demonstrated client-facing skills, including direct client work and leading discovery or solution discussions.
  • Ability to explain technical choices to engineering and non-technical audiences.
  • Practical problem-solving ability: investigate operational problems and build effective solutions without waiting for a complete specification.
  • Ability to use coding agents and AI-enabled tools effectively while applying independent engineering judgment to their outputs.
  • Ownership and follow-through, including responsibility for whether work solves the problem and not only whether code is merged.
  • Comfort making progress with incomplete information, testing assumptions early, and judging when to move quickly or investigate further.
  • Collaborative engineering mindset and ability to build solutions others can understand, operate, and maintain.
  • Patience and ability to explain complex concepts simply.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in energy, utilities, or billing and switching in regulated markets.
  • Experience with incident response or production systems on-call.
  • Experience in a forward-deployed engineering or other customer-facing engineering role.
  • Track record of building internal tools or integrations that teams adopted.
  • Evidence of reducing handoffs or rework in a delivery process.

Responsibilities

  • Build client relationships and understand how clients work by engaging with operational teams and stakeholders to identify friction, question assumptions, and find root causes.
  • Lead client discussions, build trust, demonstrate ideas, challenge requests constructively, and help clients adopt Kraken’s capabilities and ways of working.
  • Investigate workflows, systems, and data to turn unclear problems into buildable solutions; develop options, explain trade-offs, and establish a practical path forward.
  • Use Kraken’s existing capabilities and configuration where appropriate, and design, implement, test, and release production software when changes are needed.
  • Use coding agents and AI-enabled tools in investigation, development, and testing; provide context, direct their work, critically assess results, and remain accountable for what ships.
  • Own outcomes beyond deployment by supporting adoption and verifying that solutions address the original problems.
  • Partner with client engineering, delivery, and product teams to determine whether problems are best addressed through existing capabilities, targeted changes, or the broader product roadmap.
  • Bring in specialist expertise and balance immediate client needs with the long-term direction of the platform.
  • Identify solutions that can benefit other clients and help turn successful approaches into reusable capabilities and ways of working.
  • Work across changing workstreams and remain accountable for delivering working results.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance options, including FSAs.
  • Paid time off.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Parental leave for biological, adoptive, and foster parents.
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Flexible working environment.
  • Equity options for employees.
  • Modern office or co-working spaces depending on location.
