About The Position

Performs supervisory work and actively participates in activities involved in the operation, maintenance and repair of municipal facilities and equipment; performs related duties as required. This role involves supervising and participating in the maintenance and repair of various city facilities including the Municipal Building, Fire Stations, Community Centers, 12th Street Yards, and Police Department facilities. The position also requires overseeing and participating in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems, including boilers, motors, pumps, compressors, elevators, and control systems. The Foreman is responsible for planning, scheduling, and inspecting work, training staff, preparing reports, and conducting performance evaluations.

Requirements

  • At least four (4) years of full-time paid work experience in building maintenance and alteration in a maintenance department.
  • One (1) year of experience in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver's license.
  • Must meet the minimum entrance requirements and attach supporting documentation to be considered for employment.
  • Must complete the application in full.
  • Employees hired by the City must maintain residency within 25 miles of the nearest boundary of the City of Flint.

  • Possession of a valid electrical journeyman's, plumbing or mechanical contractor's license.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and participates in the operation, maintenance, repair, alterations and remodeling of the Municipal Building, Fire Stations, Community Centers, 12th Street Yards and Police Department facilities.
  • Assists in supervising maintenance and custodial staff.
  • Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electrical rooms including performing a variety of mechanical and electrical repairs on motors, pumps, compressors, elevators, automatic controllers, sensors, actuators, pneumatic controls, and other equipment.
  • Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of gas fired hot water boilers used for heating and air conditioning.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, and specifications; plans and schedules work while estimating required materials and supplies; develops work plans to maximize the efficient use of staff and resources; and inspects work both in progress and upon completion.
  • Inspects City facilities to identify needed repairs and inspects custodial work for quality and compliance.
  • Identifies and recommends solutions for repairs and custodial improvements.
  • Trains maintenance and custodial staff across all phases of their assigned duties.
  • Recommends training procedures and provides instruction to employees on safety rules and precautions related to the operation and maintenance of all equipment.
  • Prepares reports on work activities, performance, and equipment, and maintains required records.
  • Provides recommendations regarding budgetary needs.
  • Conducts interviews with job candidates and completes performance evaluations for maintenance and custodial staff.
  • May consult with employees and/or representatives to resolve workplace grievances and recommend disciplinary action for subordinate employees.
  • Performs related duties as required.
