About The Position

The Checker works in Hy-Vee’s Grocery department, operating the register, assisting customers throughout the store, and helping ensure customers have a positive experience. Checkers provide prompt, friendly service; process transactions and returns; support bagging and carry-out services; maintain merchandise and register areas; and assist with store operations and special projects. The role requires a customer-focused team member who can follow instructions, perform basic arithmetic, communicate clearly, and work in a fast-paced retail environment. No education or prior experience is required, and training is provided. Night and weekend shifts are required. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables.
Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience.
Night and weekend shifts are required.
Complete a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

Greet customers and provide prompt, friendly service.
Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow applicable local, state, and federal guidelines for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay informed about item look-up and department numbers, product features, weekly ad pricing, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and escort customers to items when requested.
Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable.
Communicate on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events.
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and follow Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
