About The Position

Hy-Vee Checkers provide friendly customer service and help ensure customers have a positive final experience in the store. The role operates the cash register, assists customers throughout the store, supports bagging and carry-out services, and helps maintain merchandise and the checkout area. Checkers must follow applicable regulations and Hy-Vee policies, work effectively with others, and report to work as scheduled and on time. No education or experience is required; training is provided. Night and weekend shifts are required. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.

Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks involving a few concrete variables.
Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing.
Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a good customer experience.
Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift; perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with POS transactions, order fulfillment, and cleaning or sanitation duties.
Complete a pre-employment drug screen successfully.

Responsibilities

Greet customers and provide prompt, friendly service, including learning customers’ names and helping make each visit positive.
Operate the cash register accurately and process cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Comply with local, state, and federal guidelines concerning WIC, food stamps, and the sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay knowledgeable about item look-up and department numbers, item features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and help customers locate items when requested.
Keep the register area clean, ensure supplies are available, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable.
Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and comply with Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
