About The Position

Hy-Vee is seeking a customer-focused Checker for its Grocery department. Checkers operate the register, assist customers throughout the store, and help ensure customers have a positive experience. The position involves processing transactions accurately, supporting store operations, maintaining the checkout area, and assisting with other store needs. Training is provided; no education or prior experience is required. This is a fast-paced retail store role that requires standing and walking throughout the shift. The anticipated starting wage is $13.00 to $16.25 per hour, depending on experience. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.

Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions.

Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift.
Complete repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning or sanitation duties.
Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service and help make each customer visit positive.
Operate the cash register accurately and process payments, including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions.
Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed.
Follow applicable local, state, and federal guidelines for WIC, food stamps, and sales of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets.
Bag or box merchandise; assist courtesy personnel and support drive-up and carry-out service.
Stay informed about item and department numbers, product features, weekly ad price changes, and sale items.
Stock, face, and rotate merchandise; clean shelves; understand shelf tags; and help customers locate items.
Keep the register area clean, maintain adequate supplies, and report improper cash levels in the drawer.
Verify register balances at the beginning and end of shifts where applicable.
Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone, answer customer questions, and follow up with appropriate personnel as needed.
Remain aware of surroundings to support store safety and security.
Assist store management with displays and decorations for promotions and events as needed.
Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as assigned.
Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and follow Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and on time.
