About The Position

The Character Performer creates innovative, fun family entertainment using specialized skills and abilities to ensure a positive guest experience. The duties include performing in a character costume and working out of costume as a character handler (cohort). Performers entertain Nickelodeon Universe and Mall of America guests, help ensure guest and character safety, and support special events such as birthday parties and mall events. The role requires regular, reliable attendance and maintaining clean work environments both onstage and offstage.

The work involves frequent standing and movement, reaching, bending, squatting, and periodic kneeling or crouching. Performers must be able to stand safely for long periods on hard surfaces and regularly bend, squat, and lift. Costumes weigh approximately 15–40 pounds, with much of the weight focused on the neck, shoulders, and back. Both costume and cohort work involve extreme temperature changes; costumes can become very hot, and ice vests are worn to help keep the body cool.

Requirements

• Provide excellent guest service.
• Represent Nickelodeon Universe and Mall of America with a high degree of professionalism.
• Use good listening skills when dealing with guests, coworkers, and supervisors.
• Work as part of a team and collaborate with other departments.
• Be able to work within a character costume; should not be claustrophobic or overly sensitive to excessive heat.
• Be in good physical condition.
• Be between 4 feet 11 inches and 5 feet 10 inches, with a slim or athletic build, to fit existing character costumes; there is a strong need for performers under 5 feet 3 inches.
• Be able to stand safely on hard-surface floors for long periods.
• Be able to regularly bend, squat, and lift, and tolerate costumes weighing approximately 15–40 pounds and extreme temperature changes.

Responsibilities

• Entertain Nickelodeon Universe and Mall of America guests in a professional manner.
• Ensure the safety of guests and costume characters.
• Provide outstanding internal and external guest service.
• Perform to the highest standards and act appropriately for family audiences.
• Take direction from Team Leads and Supervisors.
• Maintain cleanliness of work environments both onstage and offstage.
• Assist with setup, execution, and teardown of special events, including birthday parties and mall events.
• Maintain regular, reliable, and consistent attendance.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
