Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent education.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a Hospital or Clinical setting.
  • National certification as a Medical Assistant.
  • BLS certification (maintaining current certification is required for continued employment).
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology.
  • Ability to be cross-trained in Specialties, Family Medicine, and Pediatrics procedures.
  • National Certification through one of the following certifying agencies: American Allied Health Association, National Center for Competency, or the National Health Career Association.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical duties as needed in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Complete a training program as directed by the MA Training Coordinator.
  • Room patients, including obtaining vital signs, verifying medications, medical history, and other pertinent information.
  • Perform EKGs, peak flows/spirometry, and administer O2 as directed by a provider.
  • Administer respiratory treatments as directed by a provider.
  • Perform in-office labs, UDS, and normal lab call backs.
  • Perform routine prescription refills under the supervision of the MA Lead.
  • Enter orders for medication and labs as directed by a provider.
  • Scrub charts/huddle with provider and team daily.
  • Perform blood draws, injections, and immunization administration if competency requirements are met.
  • Assist with procedures and non-complicated wound care.
  • Perform suture/staple removal.
  • Schedule patients for follow-up per provider.
  • Assist with the training of other staff within the MA scope of practice.
  • Assist the team with desktop items and answer telephone calls.
  • Maintain all logs and required checks (e.g., refrigerator temperatures).
  • Work at different clinics daily, weekly, and monthly.
  • Follow different procedures for same duties in various departments including Specialties, Family Medicine, and Pediatrics.
  • Scrub patient charts and work on Gap List.
  • Manage medical referral duties, including determining referral needs, scheduling appointments with specialists, faxing chart information, determining patient payment, contacting patients for necessary information, notifying providers of pre-authorization denials, reviewing documentation for approval, and processing medication and insurance referral authorization requests.
  • Perform call center duties, including answering telephones, registering new patients, updating demographic information in EMR, scheduling appointments, reminding patients of appointment details and policies, screening new patients for eligibility, collecting financial information, taking insurance information, and preparing charts.
  • Perform medical records duties, including pulling patient charts, corresponding with patients regarding test results, processing medical records requests within the established timeframe, following medical records release procedures, and logging requests in patient charts.
