The CCL Apprentice I learns on the job under the supervision of a journeyman. Apprentices begin by developing core construction skills that support safety and productivity across industry sectors. Training includes construction site safety orientation; construction math; hand and power tools; construction drawings; basic rigging and material handling; communication and employability skills; confined-space awareness; fall protection; and First Aid/CPR/AED. After successfully completing core skills, apprentices expand their industry knowledge in one or more areas: industrial, wind, and solar construction. The role combines formal instruction with on-the-job training, homework, and evaluations. Apprentices perform general physical labor and may use a range of hand and power tools and construction equipment. They may also prepare sites, dig trenches, support excavations, erect scaffolding, remove debris, and assist other craft workers. The position requires following instructions and safety procedures, working as part of a team, and meeting deadlines and schedules. Travel and work away from the home-base area is required for the duration of the apprenticeship program. The typical work setting is a construction site, with exposure to cramped or awkward workspaces, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, varying lighting, distracting or uncomfortable noise, and hazardous equipment. Compensation is $20.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. Benefits include retirement savings, insurance and wellness offerings, and other voluntary coverage and assistance programs.
