The CCL Apprentice I learns on the job under the supervision of a journeyman. Apprentices develop foundational construction skills in safety and productivity, including construction site safety, construction math, hand and power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging and material handling, communication and employability skills, confined-space awareness, fall protection, and First Aid/CPR/AED. After successfully completing core skills, apprentices advance their industry knowledge in one or more areas of concentration: industrial, wind, and solar construction. The role involves formal instruction and on-the-job training, completing apprenticeship assignments and evaluations, maintaining a training log, and learning general construction labor. Work may include site preparation, trench digging, setting excavation braces, erecting scaffolding, and cleaning debris. Apprentices may use hand and power tools and other construction equipment, and may assist other craft workers. The position requires following instructions, safety procedures, company policies, and schedules, as well as working collaboratively and solving problems. The work takes place in a typical construction-site environment, potentially involving cramped workspaces, awkward positions, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, challenging lighting, distracting or uncomfortable noise, and hazardous equipment. The apprentice must be able to travel and work away from their home base for the entire apprenticeship program.
