About The Position

Brown Dining Services is seeking a Cashier/Checker/Clerk to interact directly with customers regarding eligibility to enter contract dining halls and payment for goods. The position works 40 hours per week for 41 weeks per year, with 11 consecutive weeks off during the summer. The position is onsite and full time. Offers of employment are contingent upon a records check satisfactory to Brown University.

Requirements

Read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
Outgoing, positive demeanor.
Demonstrated positive customer relations skills.
Ability to resolve potentially difficult customer situations.
Basic math skills for counting and making change.
Demonstrated honesty and dependability.
Speed and accuracy in cash transactions and operating cash registers.
Ability to operate a cash register and card reader, inspect IDs, discern color when ID cards are swiped, and use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
Ability to stand for extended periods.
Ability to tolerate extreme heat and cold.

Responsibilities

Greet customers and guests.
Verify eligibility to enter dining halls.
Explain department policies tactfully and positively.
Accurately account for cash and other forms of payment.
Monitor for illegal entry and removal of food and equipment from dining halls.
Answer guests’ questions and direct them to the proper area within a building or on campus.
Ensure procedures are followed accurately when assisted.
Record and total purchases on an itemizing cash register, make proper change, and resolve conflicts promptly and courteously.
Maintain the security of entrusted funds.
Account for all transactions at the end of each shift.
Observe department standards for courtesy, service, sanitation, and safety.
Maintain a neat, well-groomed, professional appearance.
Perform related Food Service Worker-Support, Service, and Sanitation tasks when requested.
Perform other tasks as requested.
