About The Position

The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC. The office of the AMS Vice President, Academic and University Affairs is responsible for a diverse portfolio that addresses student representation to the university as well as academic policy and university governance. The Campaigns and Events Coordinator will assist in practical and administrative duties such as issues-based student and university-aimed campaigns, campus engagement strategies and other initiatives. The position is best suited to a candidate with significant self-motivation, and an interest in student engagement with university and academic issues. Experience in marketing and promotions, and event and campaign-planning is required. The candidate will work closely with the VP Academic and University Affairs Office Volunteers, the Associate Vice-president Academic, the Associate Vice-president University Affairs, and the Vice-President Academic & University Affairs to engage and consult students, and plan advocacy campaigns with the University.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
  • Able to execute tasks quickly and efficiently, create long term promotion strategies and event planning experience is required
  • Interest in pursuing AMS university and academic initiatives and lobbying priorities is required
  • Strong organizational skills, and interpersonal and communication skills is required
  • Experience in team management and/or leadership is required

Nice To Haves

  • Confident public speaker is an asset
  • Able to research and write high quality policy papers and briefing documents is an asset
  • Knowledge of university and academic issues at UBC is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Sit on engagement, outreach, and issues-based UBC and AMS committees and working groups at the request of the VP Academic & University Affairs
  • Attend meetings of the VP Academic Caucus, Advocacy Committee, and other meetings on behalf of the VP Academic & University Affairs as required
  • Develop a strong grasp on issues such as current UBC policies under review or development, student affordability, housing rights, open educational resources, harm reduction, and diversity on campus.
  • Help organize and direct special events, consultations, campaigns, and long-term projects such as advocacy related to open educational resources (OERs), teaching and learning, and the communications plan for the 2027 Academic Experience Survey, student engagement campaigns surrounding university issues, and more
  • Manage the VP Academic and University Affairs Volunteer Team specialized for executing campaigns and events
  • Work with the AMS Executive, campus organizations, and off-campus groups to create partnerships and secure sponsorships
  • Foster strong team relationships with other student staff and volunteers which emphasize teamwork and communication
  • Assist in scheduling, organizing, and planning meetings and other administrative duties as required by the VP Academic and University Affairs
  • Work with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
  • Other duties as required
