About The Position

The CV Bus Driver provides safe and reliable transportation for students and staff on an as-needed basis. Assignments may include daily route coverage, field trips, athletic events, and other transportation needs. Hours and work schedules vary based on operational needs. This is not a union eligible position. The Type A School Bus (CV) driver transports students over specified routes according to time schedule. The driver ensures compliance with all traffic laws, safety regulations and school transportation policies while maintaining a safe environment for student passengers. This position does not include route bidding rights granted to CDL-licensed bus drivers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Must have no points on driving record.
  • Able to pass physical including drug test.
  • INDOT mandatory random drug testing program.
  • Bus driving safety certification card for the State of Indiana.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before students, staff, parents and community.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to calculate time, mileage, and distances accurately.
  • Ability to read gauges, schedules, and route information.
  • Ability to complete basic records and reports involving numerical data.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Continuously required to sit.
  • Occasionally required to walk or stand.
  • Frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job.
  • Frequently repeats the same hand, arm or finger motion many times.
  • Frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools.
  • Continuously driving on the job.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as students.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision, and distance.
  • Ability to assist students when an emergency evacuation is needed.
  • Must be able to hear and talk.
  • Build positive relationships with students and encourages them to reach their full potential.
  • Ability to read and understand maps.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both in oral and written form.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a Type A School Bus safely, professionally, and in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Conduct and properly document daily pre-trip and post-trip bus inspections.
  • Comply with all traffic laws, safety regulations, and district transportation procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate student discipline in accordance with the student code of conduct and transportation policies.
  • Participate in required training programs, meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the safe operation and maneuvering of a Type A school bus.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities outlined in the employment contract and follow all supervisory directives.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date route sheets and transportation records.
  • Complete required training prior to transporting students with special needs or operating a special needs route.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly bus environment to promote student safety and comfort.
  • Report accidents, incidents, mechanical issues, or safety concerns promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Must have training (only) if driving special needs route for any purpose.
  • Supervise students while transporting them.
