Behavioral Intervention Case Manager

CSU Careers•San José, CA

About The Position

San José State University’s Behavioral Intervention case management services support students experiencing significant distress, life challenges, or barriers to academic and personal success. Under the direction of the Senior Case Manager, Behavioral Intervention, this non-clinical role provides a coordinated institutional response, assesses risks to individuals and the community, and helps students access appropriate resources while considering their academic and personal needs. The Case Manager provides direct support, non-clinical risk assessment, referrals, outreach, training, education, follow-up, and assessment. The role works closely with campus offices and community providers to coordinate services for students experiencing physical, mental, psychological, or life-management difficulties. It also supports a comprehensive program to identify and manage students, faculty, and staff who may be at risk, and helps minimize the effects of mental illness or emotional distress on safety and students’ academic and personal pursuits. The position responds to behavioral concern reports, gathers information about individuals’ current mental health status, recent behavior, and potential triggers, and assesses immediate risks to themselves or others. In coordination with the Senior Case Manager, University Police, and other Threat Management Team members, the Case Manager may assess higher-concern cases using WAVR 21. The role also supports hospitalized students and authorized contacts, monitors progress, adjusts assistance as needed, and provides outreach and guidance during withdrawal, leaves of absence, and reinstatement. The Case Manager serves as a primary resource for assigned campus behavioral concern reports and provides consultations to students, faculty, staff, and others concerned about an SJSU student. Additional work includes maintaining the Behavioral Intervention Team database, researching best practices, attending weekly meetings, serving on campus safety committees, and providing information and training to the campus community.
