About The Position

A Barista is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble Café team, welcoming customers, answering questions, and helping them choose beverages and café items. The role also supports the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the Café by stocking deliveries, maintaining the bake case and dining area, and providing quick, professional service at the register. The Barista works as part of a busy team and is trained to use café technology and tools, prepare food and drinks accurately, maintain café and retail displays, receive and stock deliveries, and complete daily and weekly cleaning tasks. The position includes following FIFO and product-dating practices, supporting the bookfloor team when needed, and applying loss-prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques. As experience grows, the Barista develops product knowledge, supports sales and promotions, recommends food and beverage customizations, and follows café safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures. Baristas who master the role are expected to advance to Senior Barista. The work involves prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and substantial walking. Employees may work in other stores when able and needed to support the wider Cluster.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers cheerfully, answer questions, and help them select beverages and café items.
Maintain attractive café presentation, including the bake case, dining area, counter, and floor retail fixtures.
Operate registers quickly, competently, and reliably to provide professional customer service.
Receive, unpack, and accurately stock deliveries.
Prepare food and drinks accurately using product knowledge, recipe guides, product specification sheets, and other available tools.
Complete daily and weekly cleaning tasks and maintain café cleanliness.
Follow FIFO practices and date products consistently and correctly.
Support the bookfloor team when needed.
Follow loss-prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, identify theft or problematic behavior, and seek support for store issues.
Build knowledge of beverage, bakery, savory, gifting, and café retail products, and use it to maintain appealing presentation.
Communicate sales objectives, new limited-time offers, and café promotions to customers and colleagues.
Recommend food and beverage customizations to customers.
Use café training tools and follow café safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures.
Comply with company policies and procedures.
