About The Position

A Barista is an integral member of a Barnes & Noble Café team, welcoming customers, answering questions, and helping them find beverages and café items. The role helps maintain an attractive café presentation and efficient operations by stocking deliveries, tidying the bake case and dining area, and providing quick, friendly register service. Baristas are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility when able to help fill scheduling gaps, a positive and energetic approach to work, consideration for colleagues, cheerful customer service, and willingness to learn. They receive training in café operations and are expected to develop proficiency in preparing food and drinks, operating registers and other technology, merchandising, stocking, cleaning, and following food-safety and loss-prevention procedures. The position involves physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and considerable walking. Baristas may work in other stores when able and needed to support the wider Cluster. With experience, Baristas build knowledge of café beverages, bakery and savory items, gifting, customization options, retail products, promotions, training tools, and safety and sanitation procedures. As they master the role’s skills, they are expected to advance to Senior Barista. Baristas must comply with company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers, answer questions, and help them select beverages and café items.
Maintain an attractive café presentation and help ensure efficient café operations.
Unpack and stock deliveries; tidy the bake case and dining area.
Operate registers to provide quick, reliable, and professional service.
Use registers, computers, tablets, programs, and other tools effectively.
Maintain café cleanliness and presentation, including counter and floor retail fixtures.
Prepare food and drinks accurately using recipe guides, product specifications, and available knowledge.
Complete daily and weekly cleaning tasks during shifts.
Follow First In First Out (FIFO) practices and correctly date products.
Support the bookfloor team when needed and, when able, assist other stores in the Cluster.
Follow loss-prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques; identify theft and seek support for problematic behaviors or issues.
Build knowledge of café products, customization options, promotions, and retail offerings, and share relevant information with customers and colleagues.
Follow café safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines and procedures.
Comply with company policies and procedures.
