About The Position

A Barnes & Noble Barista welcomes customers, helps them choose beverages and café items, and contributes to the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the Café. The role includes serving customers at the register, stocking deliveries, and maintaining the bakes case and dining area. Baristas work as part of a busy team, learn operational skills, and are expected to provide cheerful, professional service while supporting colleagues and store needs. Baristas are trained to use registers, computers, tablets, programs, and other tools; prepare food and drinks; merchandise café and retail fixtures; receive and stock deliveries; maintain cleanliness; follow FIFO and product-dating practices; and apply café safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures. They also learn loss-prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques and may support the bookfloor team or other stores in the wider Cluster when needed. As their experience develops, Baristas build knowledge of beverage, bakery, savory, and gifting products; maintain appealing displays; inform customers and colleagues about promotions; recommend customizations; and support café retail options and key products. The role requires compliance with company policies and procedures. Baristas who demonstrate mastery of the role are expected to advance to Senior Barista.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers cheerfully, answer questions, and help them select beverages and café items.
Provide quick, friendly, and professional service at the register.
Maintain an attractive café presentation, including the bakes case, dining area, counter, and floor retail fixtures.
Unpack deliveries and accurately stock products.
Prepare food and drinks correctly, using product information and recipe guides as needed.
Complete daily and weekly cleaning tasks and maintain café cleanliness.
Follow FIFO practices and date products accurately and consistently.
Support the bookfloor team and, when needed, collaboratively support other stores in the Cluster.
Follow loss-prevention procedures, identify theft or problematic behavior, and seek support as appropriate; use de-escalation techniques.
Build and apply product knowledge to support sales objectives, promotions, customization recommendations, and café retail options.
Follow café safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines and procedures.
Comply with company policies and procedures.
