The Bakery/Deli Clerk prepares bakery and deli items to customer specifications, provides product samples and recommendations, and helps customers find products and learn about specials. The role involves preparing, packaging, labeling, stocking, and inventorying merchandise; checking freshness and product quality; following recipes, food-temperature logs, cooking instructions, and food-safety regulations; and using department equipment according to company guidelines. The clerk monitors inventory and equipment conditions, reports discrepancies and repair needs, and complies with safety procedures. The position also requires cooperative, respectful interaction with customers and associates, including minors, individuals with special needs, and older adults. Essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

Customer service skills.

Responsibilities

Prepare items according to customer requests using proper bakery equipment.
Offer product samples to help customers discover products or answer inquiries.
Inform customers about bakery and deli specials.
Provide fresh products in the correct portion sizes to prevent shrink.
Recommend bakery or deli items based on customers’ needs.
Use bakery and kitchen equipment according to company guidelines, including refrigerators, freezers, slicers, ovens, stoves, computerized scales, fryers, steamers, and Robot Coupe equipment.
Prepare foods according to food-temperature logs and cooking instructions.
Measure, prepare, and mix ingredients according to recipes using kitchen utensils and equipment.
Prepare, package, label, and inventory ingredients and merchandise.
Check product quality and freshness, review sell-by dates, and take appropriate action.
Label, stock, and inventory department merchandise.
Report product ordering and shipping discrepancies to the department manager.
Understand the store layout and help customers locate products.
Stay current on present, future, seasonal, and special advertisements.
Maintain knowledge of department products and answer questions or make suggestions.
Monitor inventory and stocking conditions and note discrepancies.
Maintain proper temperatures in cases and coolers and maintain temperature logs.
Promote trust and respect among associates.
Create a welcoming environment by answering customer questions about products in the department and throughout the store.
Follow food-safety regulations and guidelines.
Comply with safety procedures, identify unsafe conditions, and notify store management.
Inspect equipment for preventive maintenance needs and notify the appropriate department or store manager of items needing repair.
Notify management of customer or employee accidents.
Work cooperatively in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment and manage conflict in a reasonable, nonconfrontational, cooperative manner.
Handle customer and business information honestly and with integrity.
Follow directions and seek assistance when needed to resolve customer and business issues.
Provide support and assistance through direct interaction with minors, individuals with special needs, and older adults.
