About The Position

This position is an Associate Head for a Division 1 Softball Program and will assist the head coach in all aspects of operating a successful sports program. This position will be the lead recruiting coordinator, overseeing and managing the recruiting process for incoming student-athletes. It will include awarding athletic scholarships, their teaching and development of those student-athletes during their athletic and educational tenure at Stony Brook University, and in the extensive daily administrative operations of their respective sport program. In addition, the associate head will be evaluated on the extent to which they provide each student-athlete a positive, meaningful, educational experience through athletics. They will also oversee the management of all volunteer/student workers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Four (4) years of full-time coaching experience at the college level in the sport of softball.
  • Prior experience with recruiting.
  • Understanding of NCAA Compliance Rules (played a Division I, II, or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics, or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program).

  • Experience with administrative responsibilities in the sport of softball (e.g., team scheduling, budget preparation & administration, facility usage, public relations, fundraising, community service, and other daily operations for the program).

  • Prior experience with hitting and/or outfield instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead recruiting coordinator, responsible for all duties associated with the recruitment process of prospective student-athletes.
  • Evaluate talent, both athletically and academically, and lead the process of building relationships with prospective student-athletes.
  • Play a decisive role in the active recruitment of identified student-athletes and award athletics scholarships.
  • Manage an assigned recruiting territory and identify prospective student-athletes through research, evaluating talent at local & national events, initiating correspondence, and maintaining relationships with coaches and prospects.
  • Manage a database of prospects and maintain records of contacts to ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and university regulations.
  • Propose, manage, and adhere to a recruiting budget for each event attended.
  • Teach all basic and advanced skills required in the sport of Softball.
  • Develop and implement sound, safe practice plans that successfully prepare student-athletes with the fundamentals of the specific sport.
  • Assist the head coach in developing a comprehensive and strategic game plan for each scheduled contest.
  • Evaluate upcoming opponents by breaking down game tapes and preparing scouting reports.
  • Organize and coordinate a wide variety of administrative tasks as assigned by the head coach, including team travel, contest scheduling, budget preparation & administration, facility usage, public relations, marketing, fundraising, community service, and other daily operations for the program.
  • Work independently with various support services in the Department of Athletics and campus constituents (i.e. Compliance Office, Financial Aid, Admissions, & Registrar) in carrying out administrative tasks.
  • Oversee the academic success of the student-athlete and assist with academic problems, including providing guidance/counseling and support.
  • Supervise and monitor study halls, check class attendance, and organize weekly and monthly academic meetings with each student-athlete.
  • Ensure knowledge of, and adherence to, NCAA rules and regulations pertaining to recruiting, eligibility, and general operation of the Softball Program.
  • Pass the NCAA Recruiting Exam on an annual basis to be eligible to recruit off-campus.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

  • $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
