The Assistant Team Leader (ATL) provides services and support to people with intellectual disabilities and brain injuries in community-based settings. This professional leadership role combines direct support services with assistance to Team Leaders and the Program Director, including oversight of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and administrative work. The ATL helps promote a safe, welcoming environment that supports members’ individual goals and aspirations. This is considered an essential health care worker position and may require working one-on-one with members during an emergency to ensure their safety. The ATL shares responsibility for staffing schedules, shift coverage, onboarding and training, timecard and expense approvals, site and vehicle checks, maintenance requests, and monitoring DSP performance. The ATL assists with oversight of DSP staff and assumes primary responsibility for the Team Leaders’ and Program Director’s caseload in their absence, while also providing backup support. When providing direct care, the ATL performs duties described for DSP—Dayhab and DSP—Supported Employment roles. This includes supporting members’ service plans and individualized goals, monitoring safety and medication needs, assisting with training activities and behavioral support plans, and communicating professionally with guardians and other stakeholders. The role requires sound judgment, flexibility, organization, professionalism, and effective collaboration in potentially stressful situations.
