About The Position

The College of Engineering Technology at Ferris State University invites applications from a diverse group of outstanding candidates for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Welding Engineering Technology. We are seeking a student-focused educator who is passionate about creating meaningful learning experiences, integrating current technology into the learning environment, and engaging with students both inside and beyond the classroom. Teaching may include undergraduate and graduate courses. Candidates are expected to foster a meaningful learning experience for our students, faculty are expected to be student-oriented, advise, and integrate current technology into the learning environment. Additionally, faculty will participate in collaborative efforts to foster curricular efforts, participate in assessment of student learning, and further develop programmatic enhancement. Specifically, we expect the candidate to be willing to engage students outside the classroom, support and expand our existing academic initiatives, and be willing to mentor students beyond a traditional academic advising role. In support of teaching, candidates will engage in scholarly/professional activities and participate in department, college, and university committees. Off-campus and online teaching may be required. Courses are primarily taught in person at one of Ferris State University’s campuses or approved FSU sites, although off-campus and online teaching may also be required. The selected candidate must reside in Michigan after accepting employment and will perform duties at a Ferris site. Tenure awarded at a previous institution is required for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. The anticipated start date for this position is January 2027 at the earliest and August 2027 at the latest. The selected candidate for this position must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire without employer assistance or sponsorship now or in the future. Requirements

  • Minimum five years teaching experience to include an award of tenure for rank of Associate Professor.
  • The standard to teach college credit courses at the associate degree level (100, 200) shall be the bachelor's (or higher) degree in field or closely related area.
  • The standard to teach college credit courses at the baccalaureate level (300, 400) shall be the master's degree in field or closely related area or a master's degree and 18 graduate hours in field.
  • The standard to teach college credit courses at the graduate level shall be a terminal degree in field or closely related area; or a practice terminal qualification as defined by the college faculty qualification guideline.
  • Tested experience may include discipline specific certifications, licensure, and/or other approved non-degree credentials and possess a breadth and depth of experience outside of the classroom in real-world situations relevant to the discipline or subfield for the specific course or courses they will teach.
  • The quality and nature of the tested experience shall be at a professional level; demonstrate the integration and application of an appropriate body of knowledge; illustrate a progressive level of applied knowledge and responsible charge of professional work.
  • The experience shall illustrate professional expertise at a level to be foundational to the development of professional judgement that safeguards public property and life safety.
  • The experience shall relate directly to the content of the course taught.
  • The experience shall be documented.
  • It should be noted that experience teaching in the discipline does not count toward tested experience.
  • The following combinations of education and experience shall be considered qualifying tested experience to teach at the associates level (100, 200). The experience considered shall comply with the quality and nature of tested experience defined above.
  • a bachelor's degree or higher out of field and an associate's degree in field and 5 years of relevant industry experience.

  • Demonstrated successful experience working directly with people from diverse backgrounds, including cultural, educational, socioeconomic, and life experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Development and delivery of theoretical and practical academic course content in WELT and WELE programs.
  • Commit to student success through advising, recruiting, curriculum development and assessment.
  • Develop and deliver lectures, demonstrate welding and related processes/equipment, and maintain laboratory facilities and equipment.
  • Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in university committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (e.g.) reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time).
  • Candidates are expected to teach at the Big Rapids campus. Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment.
  • Teach full-time during the 9-month academic year (or 12 month).
  • Recruitment of students (including Dawg Days, Admitted Student Days, visits to high schools or career tech centers, and other University-outreach events) will occur throughout the academic year and include some Saturdays.
  • Serve on program committees and represent the program(s) on College and University committees.
  • Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development, assessment, and quality assurance.
  • Teach and coordinate elective courses in areas of expertise.
  • Collaborate in design and implementation of additional undergraduate and graduate degrees.
  • Maintain records and conduct assessment and advising in accordance with policies and procedures developed by the university, college, school, department, and/or program.
  • Perform duties in accordance with established University policies.
  • Act as liaison between the program and professional organizations through active, individual involvement and, potentially as the program-appointed representative.
  • Enthusiastically support student success through active involvement with individual students, student organizations, and student competitions, both within and outside of the classroom.
  • Remain current in the profession.
  • Work with colleagues to develop new curricular initiatives.
  • Cultivates an environment of belonging that values, respects, supports, and celebrates individual similarities and differences, allowing students, faculty, and staff to thrive authentically.
  • Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives.
  • Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
  • Communication skills (both written and oral) commensurate with the delivery of exceptional instruction in an educational engineering technology environment both in the classroom and laboratory for a diverse audience.
  • Facilitate weekly office hours per policy.
  • Assisting in program development and equipment selection.
  • Participate in a faculty team environment and maintain a working relationship with the welding industry.
