About The Position

The Assistant Professor (CFA) position is responsible for providing expert clinical care to patients, participating in translational and/or clinical research, and teaching fellows, residents, and students. This faculty role reports to the Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine and focuses primarily on inpatient care. The position requires strong communication skills for interacting with patients, families, staff, and colleagues. As the department operates 24/7/365, nocturnal shifts are expected. The role involves providing clinical expertise in patient care management and creating a teaching environment in Onco-Hospitalist Medicine. The Assistant Professor must be fully ambulatory with excellent manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual/auditory acuity. They need strong analytical skills for patient problem assessment and advice, as well as emotional and psychological stability for compassionate patient and family management. Responsibilities include developing clinical research studies, independently evaluating new patients, initiating referrals, and providing follow-up care. Clinical procedures will encompass standard patient care. The role also involves representing the department in professional matters, maintaining a clinical practice, providing physician staffing, reviewing coding and charge documents, completing patient documentation, corresponding with physicians, attending continuing education, and requesting consultations. The Assistant Professor will act as a role model and provide peer review. Administrative duties include institutional service, team participation, policy compliance, and serving on committees. Research activities involve collaborative research, team science, developing clinical research programs, seeking funding, and potentially instructing research personnel. Educational activities include mentoring.

Requirements

Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and/or department mission.
Appropriate post medical doctoral training per discipline.
Completed the M.D. degree in an accredited medical school or equivalent.
Completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent.
Made application and been accepted by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Licensed as a physician in the State of Texas.
Board certified in Internal Medicine or obtain board certification within 3 years of employment.
Licensed to practice in Texas.
Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted.
At least 2 years experience as Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist, or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships).

The Assistant Professor, CFA, will focus most of his/her clinical activity in the Inpatient Service.
As the Department of Hospital Medicine is a service that operates 24/7/365, nocturnal shifts will also be supported by the hospitalist physician.
The Assistant Professor, CFA, must be fully ambulatory and have excellent bilateral manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, and visual and auditory acuity to perform the job functions.
The Assistant Professor, CFA, will be intelligent with outstanding analytical skills to make judgments regarding the patient’s medical problems and advise the patient on methods to improve their care.
Furthermore, the Assistant Professor, CFA, must have emotional and psychological stability so that he/she will be able to manage patients and their families in a compassionate and positive manner.
The Assistant Professor, CFA, will participate in the development of clinical research studies and will be independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiation of appropriate referrals, and follow-up as appropriate.
Clinical procedures practiced will encompass those pertinent in delivering standard care to the patient.
Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations.
Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty.
This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications.
Develops and maintains a clinical practice for patients referred to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Provides physician staffing for the Department of Hospital Medicine at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other internists with the same level of training and experience.
Visually reviews for proper ICD-9 and CPT coding and approves all charge documents within 5 working days.
Completes patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy.
Will require dictating in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.
Corresponds as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty.
This will require listening and assimilating information from the conferences.
Requests appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or by writing to other physicians.
Acts as a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
Provides peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.
Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationship including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.
Demonstrates potential for institutional service.
Shows promise for effective participation in teams as appropriate for appointment role(s).
Complies with all policies and procedures.
Serves on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site.
